NIMENA called for deliberate investment in indigenous engineering, local standards, research and skills development as the foundation for a more technically sovereign maritime economy.

The Institution’s position is that Nigeria’s maritime potential cannot be separated from the strength of its engineering capability. Local content therefore extends beyond procurement to include design competence, vessel inspection, classification, certification, shipbuilding, dry-docking and offshore support expertise.

NIMENA also highlighted young marine engineers as a strategic national asset and called for stronger training pathways, simulation, digital engineering, computer-aided ship design, industrial exposure and modern research infrastructure.

The broader agenda combines local capacity, harmonised standards, institutional collaboration and investment in research and maritime technology so that Nigerian engineers can solve more of the sector’s challenges locally.
