Weak standards are stalling Nigeria’s ₦1tn blue economy potential, maritime engineers say

Maritime engineering stakeholders identified weak standardisation, technical dependence and gaps in local capability as major barriers to realising greater value from Nigeria’s blue economy.

NIMENA’s leadership has argued that Nigeria possesses strong maritime assets and significant human capital, but needs a clearer national vision and stronger technical systems to translate those advantages into jobs, industrial growth and global competitiveness.

The discussion also highlighted challenges including substandard marine equipment, weak conformity assessment, inadequate shipyard capability, fragmented enforcement and dependence on foreign certification and technical validation.

Strengthening standards, engineering regulation, local certification pathways and digital capability would support safer operations, more durable locally built vessels, lower maintenance costs and stronger participation in the global maritime value chain.
